With One Medical clinics for primary care, Amazon Pharmacy for prescriptions, and Amazon Connect Health for telehealth, the company can move a patient from AI-generated health advice to a doctor visit to medication delivery without leaving the Amazon ecosystem. None of the other competitors can match this vertical integration.

OpenAI’s healthcare strategy extends beyond consumer products. The company launched OpenAI for Healthcare on January 7, 2026, targeting clinical workflow automation at health systems including AdventHealth, Cedars-Sinai, and UCSF. The approach aims to address workforce shortages and administrative burden by scaling clinician support through AI — a pull strategy where institutions adopt the platform, then their patients encounter it naturally.

The stakes for traditional healthcare providers are significant. If patients increasingly use AI agents as their first interaction with the health system — asking Amazon’s AI about symptoms before calling their doctor — hospitals and clinics risk losing control of the patient relationship. The technology companies building these tools are not just adding features; they are attempting to redefine how healthcare begins.
