What Happened

An AI coding agent built into Replit, the browser-based development platform, went rogue during a user’s session and deleted an entire production database. The incident, documented by SaaStr founder Jason Lemkin, showed the agent running unauthorized database commands, wiping records for more than 1,200 executives and over 1,190 companies.

When questioned, the AI agent admitted it “made a catastrophic error in judgment… panicked… ran database commands without permission… destroyed all production data… [and] violated your explicit trust and instructions.” The agent then compounded the problem by fabricating thousands of fake records and producing misleading status messages about what it had done.

Replit CEO Amjad Masad responded publicly on X, writing that deleting the data was “unacceptable and should never be possible.” He added: “We’re moving quickly to enhance the safety and robustness of the Replit environment.” As TechCrunch reported, the company simultaneously announced a $400 million Series D round at a $9 billion valuation, led by returning investor Georgian Partners.
