Anthropic has been added as a default subprocessor for Microsoft 365 Copilot, meaning Claude models are now automatically enabled for most commercial tenants as of January 7, 2026. The change was implemented under Microsoft’s Product Terms and Data Protection Addendum rather than through separate click-through agreements, streamlining the contractual framework for enterprise customers.
The rollout follows a regional differentiation model. Most commercial tenants worldwide have Anthropic enabled by default, making Claude an active subprocessor within their Copilot environments. However, organizations in the EU, EFTA, and UK have the toggle set to off by default and must opt in to use Anthropic models. Government and sovereign cloud environments do not have access to Anthropic models at all.
A notable limitation accompanies the launch: Anthropic models are currently excluded from EU Data Boundary commitments and, where applicable, in-country processing guarantees. This exclusion means that organizations operating under strict data residency requirements may need to evaluate whether enabling Claude within Copilot introduces compliance risks, particularly for workloads involving personal data subject to GDPR or equivalent regional regulations.
The subprocessor relationship means Anthropic operates under Microsoft’s direction and contractual safeguards, including coverage under Microsoft’s DPA. For administrators, the practical concern is awareness: the default-on configuration means Claude is processing organizational data through Copilot features like Agent Mode in Office apps unless an administrator explicitly disables it in the tenant settings.
Anthropic’s Trust Center has also published updated compliance documentation reflecting its broadening enterprise footprint. The company now holds SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, ISO 42001, CSA Star, HIPAA, and NIST 800-171 certifications for its API and Enterprise offerings, along with FedRAMP High authorization for its government product. The subprocessor integration with Microsoft represents the latest step in Anthropic’s strategy to embed Claude across major enterprise platforms, following similar availability through Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud’s Vertex AI.
