SAP and Swiss robotics company ANYbotics have deepened their partnership to connect ANYbotics’ four-legged ANYmal inspection robots directly into SAP’s enterprise resource planning software. The collaboration, part of SAP’s Project Embodied AI initiative, treats robots not as standalone machines but as mobile data-gathering nodes within industrial IoT networks that feed information directly into business systems.

Nicole Zingg, Director of Technology Partnerships at ANYbotics, described the approach in concrete terms. “We build a hardware platform, but inspection robotics is really about data that is consistent and trustworthy,” she told SAP News. “If customers are using SAP, SAP is where ANYbotics needs to be native.”

Project Embodied AI was launched by SAP to find robotics partners capable of extending SAP Business AI into physical operations. The goal is to enable robots to autonomously perform complex tasks while understanding the broader business context in which those tasks sit, rather than operating as isolated data collectors.

Why It Matters

Industrial inspection has long relied on human workers entering environments described as “big, dirty, dusty, and dangerous.” Refineries, offshore platforms, and chemical plants require routine checks that are expensive to staff, hazardous to perform, and difficult to schedule consistently. The SAP-ANYbotics integration moves physical AI past the pilot phase by closing the loop between robotic field data and enterprise decision-making.

Instead of producing standalone reports that sit in separate monitoring dashboards, the robots now trigger maintenance actions inside the same ERP systems companies already use to manage their operations. This eliminates the manual step of translating inspection findings into work orders.

One offshore wind customer demonstrated the practical impact by eliminating the need for personnel deployments to remote platforms for months. By relying on ANYmal’s prior inspection data, the company identified issues, determined the required expertise, and planned equipment needs before dispatching anyone. The result was a significant reduction in costly trial-and-error visits that previously required sending teams to remote locations without full knowledge of what they would find on arrival.

Technical Details

ANYmal is a four-legged robot engineered to navigate heavy industrial environments autonomously. Its sensor suite includes thermal imaging cameras, ultrasonic leak detectors, gas concentration sensors, and acoustic anomaly detection modules. The robot’s onboard AI processes sensor data in real time, enabling immediate classification of anomalies. If ANYmal detects an irregular motor frequency, for example, it does not simply flash a warning on a separate screen. It uses APIs to communicate the finding directly to SAP’s asset management module, where it can automatically generate a maintenance work order.

Integration runs through two primary SAP systems. SAP Field Service Management dispatches work orders to ANYmal the same way it would to a human technician, treating the robot as another resource in the scheduling system. SAP Business Technology Platform enables broader robot-data integration across customer landscapes, allowing inspection results to flow into analytics, compliance reporting, and predictive maintenance models.

Zingg framed the design principle simply: “ANYmal has to put data in the SAP system, just like human team members.” This philosophy means the robot’s outputs are structured to match existing SAP data schemas, reducing the integration burden for customers already running SAP environments.

Who’s Affected

The partnership targets operators of oil refineries, offshore wind platforms, cement plants, and chemical facilities. These are industries where routine inspections are hazardous, expensive, and difficult to staff consistently. With over 200 ANYmal robots already in productive use worldwide, the technology is past the proof-of-concept stage and operating at commercial scale.

For SAP’s existing enterprise customers, the integration means robotic inspection data flows into systems they already manage, reducing the need for separate monitoring dashboards, manual data entry from field reports, or custom middleware to bridge operational technology and enterprise IT. Companies that have already invested in SAP infrastructure face lower switching costs to adopt the ANYmal integration compared to building a new monitoring stack from scratch.

What’s Next

ANYbotics plans to expand integration through SAP BTP to deploy robot-collected data more broadly across customer landscapes, including into supply chain and compliance workflows beyond asset management. Safety validation with on-site field engineers remains part of the deployment process, and the companies are working to capture organizational knowledge as structured data flowing into SAP systems. The pace of broader adoption will depend on whether the integration delivers measurable reductions in unplanned downtime and inspection costs at the sites already running ANYmal units, and whether SAP can attract additional robotics partners into the Project Embodied AI ecosystem.
